Chapter 11: Gender

What is gender?

A lot of people get the word gender and sex confused with each other. This will help you understand the difference: The distinction between gender and sex is the distinction between socially and culturally created roles on the one side (gender) and the biological categories of male/female on the other side (sex). This distinction is generally used to highlight the existence of disparities in how power is distributed in societies.

Magazine Article:

I found this on the New York Times website. Feminist Michelle Bachelet became the first defense minister of Chile in 2002 then later became the country's first female president. She is really, really fighting for gender equality. I am really impressed with her accomplishments. Read on at the following link!

Video Clip:

Wow! Check out this link, it's a man interviewing kids about gender roles. Both the boys and the girls agree on the roles that men and women should play in society.

Two Internet sites:

Here's a link about workplace discrimination. It's pretty long, but it covers a lot of grounds and a lot of statistics that I found pretty fascinating.

I have been reading up on gender gender identity issues in kids, and there were a lot of very interesting reads on the subject. There's proof that if a little boy plays with other little girls, barbies, dresses like a female, wears make-up, etc. He will be much more likely to be bullied later in life, and they will be bigger targets for pedophiles. Here's a link for you, it continues on this interesting, yet controversial topic.

Poem:

Mary Gilmore wrote this poem about gender inequality.

The Woman

I am not very patient
Yet patient I must be
With him beside my pillow
And the babe upon my knee.

I am not very patient,
I would have wings to fly,
Yet I am tied to cradles
Until the day I die.

One is a rocking cradle.
(Sleep babe, without alarms.)
And for the other baby,
The cradle of my arms.

Strange that I was given
Thoughts that soar to heaven,
Yet I must sit and keep
Children in their sleep.

Two Paragraphs:
To be completely honest, I didn't know the difference between gender and sex until sociology 101. It's important to know the differences for several different reasons. In a scholastically situation, it's necessary to be able to correctly distinguish the two so you will be easy to understand, and there won't be any confusion.

It's been really enjoyable for me reading the chapter on gender in the book and also researching it outside of class. Personally, I mostly get a kick out of (if you couldn't tell) reading about gender roles and how we are expected to fulfill them, based on the sex we're born.
