Chapter 13: Family and Religion

What is family and religion?

Family and societies are all a huge part of each and every society. No matter where you go there will be family units, and the vast majority of them will have some sort of religious affiliation.

Photos representing families and religion

Religion: This is one of my all time favorite pictures! I feel like this is the best picture to represent religion because it includes a lot of the big ones that a vast majority of the world believe in.

Family: The Simpson's are a very typical, dysfunctional family. All though they are dysfunctional, they still all love each other very much. Kind of reminds me of my family!

Here's a video that may be controversial to a lot of religious folks, but it does raise a good point. Why is it okay for religious people to post billboards about their saviors, but a Atheist can't put up a billboard up saying 'imagine no religion'--check it out! It's pretty interesting.

Two internet sites:

This link poses a very interesting question: Does religion have a positive impact on family values? Personally, I think yes, religion does have a positive impact on family, it instills a lot of good values, however, non-religious families have the same opportunity to create a good, moral, hard-working kid without the presence of a bible. Anyway, this link is very interesting and poses a lot of good questions.

I chose the following link because Christianity seems to be a very prominent religion here in North Idaho. The article talks about who is more prone to be Christian and how family is very important to them. Check out the link, it gives a little more insight on Christians and their morals and values.

Song lyrics:

I absolutely adore this song. It is so beautifully written, and her voice is haunting. My mother used to play it all the time when I was a kid. All though my entire family is not religious, we all have a great respect for this song.

Joan Osbourne-One of Us

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in Jesus and the saints and all the prophets

And yeah yeah god is great yeah yeah god is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
He's trying to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in Rome

And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

What if god was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home
Just trying to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just trying to make his way home
Nobody calling on the phone
Except for the pope maybe in rome

Two Paragraphs:

Religion is a very controversial topic. It seems like no matter who you argue with over religious beliefs, no one ever wins. There are tons and tons of religions out there, and everyone seems to think they're right. Despite everyone thinking their religion is the right one, I think nearly everyone has the same goal in life--to do something good, be happy and healthy, and move onto a better place after we're all dead.

A few years ago, I was talking to a very, very firm believer in Christianity. She told me that I may be a good person, but no matter how 'good' I am, I will go to hell because I don't believe in her God. I asked her 'so, if someone molests children, kills animals and people, and bombs all of the world, he'll go to heaven as long as he believes in God?'--she answered yes.

Religion can be a scary thing, or it can be a very good thing as long as people don't abuse it and use it for the right reason. I know all religions will never co-exist, but in the end, we're all going to die and go to the same place. People just need to live their lives, be kind, work hard, and contribute to society. What's the point in fighting over a unsolvable issue?
